Welcome to my corner of the internet

A short introduction: who I am, and what I write about here.

Welcome. This is the first post here, so a short note on what this site is and who is writing it.

Who I am

I'm Richard Freeman. I started out at the bench with a PhD in molecular biology, then moved through commercial roles at Thermo Fisher, Roche, and Roslin Technologies into proteomics at Illumina, where I am now. The thread running through all of it is the same: science that is genuinely hard, and the work of getting it into the right hands.

What I care about

I also run a small consultancy, Cervus, and have spent a good deal of time around the cultivated-meat world. Mostly, though, I am interested in the same thing I always have been: helping good science find its footing commercially, without losing what made it good science in the first place.

What you'll find here

A few recurring threads:

  • selling to scientists, and why it is its own discipline
  • the move from the bench to the commercial side
  • the occasional technical deep-dive (qPCR, proteomics, whatever I am close to)
  • experiments with AI tools, including the fact that I built this site largely with Claude
